Road Trip 2011: Day 1 of 20 (Atlanta to Charlotte)

Tuesday May 31, 2011

It's hard to believe after all the planning and anticipation that the day has finally arrived.

Usually we're on our way before Memorial Day, but Helen had to work the day after Memorial Day in order to make up for a snow day earlier in the year. The boys went to work with Helen since they got out of school on Friday. The boys like to go to school with Helen. They pack snacks, movies, games, etc and have a good time.

On the way home from work, Helen picked up some library books and took the boys to get haircuts. Usually Helen cuts their hair, but she ran out of time with everything else going on. The boys liked that it only took 15 minutes at Sport Clips when it takes Mommy 45 minutes.

I left work a little early anxious to hit the road. As usual, it took longer than anticipated to finalize the packing and get out of the driveway. It didn't help that it was hot as a mofo. I was drenched by the time I got the bikes on the bike rack. I almost wasn't going to take the time to change, but I'm glad I did. Dry clothes felt so much better.

After one last errand to the drug store we were on our way about 7:30. By then traffic had died down and we had clear sailing. Helen drove the first couple hours to Spartanburg, SC where we stopped at Chickfila for dinner. I drove until midnight when we stopped for the night at a Hampton Inn just north of Charlotte NC in Concord, home of NASCAR's Lowe's Motor Speedway.
