New Mexico (Day 4 of 6): Santa Fe - Abiquiu - Taos

Santa Fe Motel and Inn

Little private patio outside our casita

Nice breakfast each morning

Cozy seating area with warm fire

Snow from the night before

Taking a nice drive about an hour north to Abiquiu

Adam is still sleepy

Abiquiu Inn for the Georgia O'Keefe Home and Studio Tour

Derek decided to stay at the motel and catch up on some rest and school work rather than "go see some artist's home". So much for making the effort to buy the tickets well ahead of time like they suggested on the website.

A big storm blew through the night before and took out the power to the area

With no power they couldn't show the introductory tour movie and the plumbing was out because it required some sort of powered pump

It was just a short ride in the tour bus to the O'Keefe home and studio

The guide was a little flustered when we all said we needed to use the bathroom really bad

The view is gorgeous. They don't let you take any pictures of the interior, but there are some here.

The house has a really nice big garden

The house comes with valuable water rights that allows for flooding the garden every Monday morning for 2 hours

Back at the inn after the tour - still no power

We decided to make the 20 minute drive north to see O'Keefe's other home at Ghost Ranch

Adam declared this "the prettiest drive" of our trip

Trujillo's Weaving

We were trying to take the High Road To Taos and we stopped in this neat little shop for directions

Rancho De Chimayo for lunch

On these trips I hate it when I know there are iconic places to see and eat and then we don't get there for whatever reason and end up eating at just some regular old place. This time we hit it right.

Our waitress suggested this beautiful prickly pear lemonade for Adam

Our first of two sopapilla baskets. They were so good drizzled with honey. Adam's meal even came wrapped in one.

Adam declared this his favorite dining experience of the trip

Mousse, flan, and coffee for dessert. Everything was terrific.

Sanctuary De Chimayo nearby

Back on the High Road

At some point we missed a turn (because the sign was spray painted) and headed into the little desolate town of Truchas

It was a beautiful drive, but the road turned to mud and we almost got stuck. Helen did a noble job of backing us out just in time. Adam said he was scared and Derek was almost an orphan.

Walking around Taos Plaza

90 minute drive back south to Santa Fe for dinner at Café Pasqual's. On the way out of Taos you couldn't help but notice all the stars in the sky. We pulled over and got out of the car to admire the sky bursting with stars. It looked like this.

Derek spent the day going for a run around Santa Fe and enjoying some alone time. We talked to him from Taos and got him to set up an 8:30 reservation at Pasqual's. I was bummed we didn't get to eat there the night before and was happy that we were getting to eat at another iconic local place.

It's a really cozy neat place and everything was great, but Adam still thought Rancho De Chimayo was better

Nice walk back to the Santa Fe Motel and Inn

  1. Some artist-philistine. ADAM YOU ARE RIGHT. that is a pretty drive, but there are others in NM. I am jealous.
