Back To School 2018-19

Meet your teacher day at Adam's school last week

Adam is in 11th grade at the new Paul Duke STEM High School. There are only about 650 kids in the school. There are no seniors and only about 75 juniors. Much different than the 3500+ kids and 30+ trailers at Norcross High School where he was his first two years.

There were a lot of excited parents walking around, but the enthusiasm of the kids didn't seem to match up. Adam said, "Dad, that's because we all know that it's still just school".

First day of the 2018-19 school year...yippee!

Adam is excited to be driving alone

Since there are so few upper classmen at his new school, there are only a handful of kids driving and hundreds of empty parking places to choose from. I have been going to daycare, school, or the bus stop with the kids for almost 20 years and I will miss it.

Back home after the first day. I told Adam I can tell it's him because I can hear the music thumping.

He gets out earlier than his old school, so he drives to the old school parking lot to hang out with his friends after school. He said the new school is ok, but he only recognizes a few faces and doesn't know anyone well. The demographics make it similar to an interesting story I was discussing with him recently about working at a chicken processing plant

Helen started this tradition years ago as something fun for the first day of school. The boys aren't as excitable as they were when they were little, but who doesn't like chocolate pudding? This year the first week was a little hectic, but she eventually got around to it.
