Hawaii 2014 (Day 5 of 19): Oahu - Makapuu Point Tide Pools, North Shore

Headed southeast along the coast

We loved the contrast of the ocean on one side and the soaring lush green mountains on the other

One thing we didn't like about Hawaii was all the above ground utility wires. The views would be so much nicer without them.

Waimanalo Beach

There was a farmer's market in the parking lot

Unloading the Altima

Back at Makapuu Point

We were there the previous night for the lighthouse trail at sunset. Today we're there for the tide pools.

The trail down to the tide pools starts at the whale lookout sign

This is no easy paved path

Thankfully someone painted arrows onto the rocks so you know how to get back up

The guy in the pool below passed us as we were about halfway down. It was neat being the only ones there at first, but seeing someone else made us feel not so crazy for being there.

The money shot

This was one of our favorite Hawaii experiences

We had this remote place all to ourselves (except for the one other guy and he was really nice). The views were incredible and you could smell, hear, and feel the power of the ocean with the waves crashing all around.

Eventually other people made their way down. There were probably about 20 other people when we left.

Some underwater shots

Now for the trek back up. It was actually easier, but more tiring.

We started calling Adam, the Billy Goat, because he's so ornery, but he also climbs like one

Keneke's for lunch

No pictures because I filled up a camera memory card at the tide pools and the new one must have had some debris on it causing the pictures to get corrupted. I cleaned it and reformatted it later and it worked fine. Anyway, we had some plate lunches, shave ice, and ice cream. Most of the food was good, but the meat - not so much. It seemed like it was not quite the quality it should have been.

Giovanni's Shrimp Truck in Kahuku

We went home and cleaned up before heading to the North Shore for a shrimp truck dinner

The garlic hot dog was surprisingly good. We also had the garlic shrimp and the lemon butter shrimp. We liked the lemon butter shrimp better. The garlic on the shrimp got a little overpowering after a while, but the rice with all the garlic shrimp juices melted in was outstanding.

Ted's Bakery in Sunset Beach

Their signature chocolate haupia pie. It looks so meek and unimpressive.

Man, was that pie good. We got another piece along with a banana cream piece to go. They were so good. So many times we've eaten desserts that look good, but don't have the taste to match and we wonder how can something look so good and taste so blah? Everything we had at Ted's was uncannily good. How do they do it?

Pupukea Beach (Shark's Cove)

We were thinking about snorkeling there and wanted to check it out

Some people going out for a night dive. In a place called Shark's Cove? Are you kidding?

The place was really beautiful, especially at sunset
