Hawaii 2014 (Day 6 of 19): Oahu - North Shore

Headed out early to the North Shore for some snorkeling

Chinaman's Hat

Kualoa Ranch looked nice

We were disappointed that there weren't more views of the ocean from the road on the drive to the North Shore. We expected big sweeping views and cliffs. It's flat and most of the time private homes and resorts obstruct the view.

We probably would have enjoyed the Polynesian Cultural Center, but we didn't want to devote the day to it
Past all the shrimp trucks

Our destination: Pupukea Beach (Shark's Cove)

What a difference daylight makes. The previous night we couldn't tell that the water is so clear. We had read some reviews about snorkeling at Shark's Cove that led us to believe it was only for advanced snorkelers. We were so glad we ignored them because the place was terrific.  Hanauma Bay was like Disney World - all sheltered and perfect, but Shark's Cove is the real deal. Lots of different structures, depths, colors, and fish.

Ehukai Beach (Banzai Pipeline)

Lots of wild chickens in Hawaii

For Adam, snorkeling is okay but what he really wants is big waves

It's summer so the waves are a lot smaller than in the winter, but they were still plenty powerful. You could really feel the power of the swell. The waves broke right on the shore, but the sand was so soft that it didn't hurt too bad when you got pounded.

Of course we had to go to Ted's again

This time we got the whole pie...and more

So good

Stopped at one of the many roadside stands for some fresh pineapple and coconut milk

The pineapple was so good, but the coconut milk was a little strange to us. Would have been better if it was colder.

More snorkeling at Turtle Bay

This helicopter surprised us when it took off from a helipad next to where we parked

The resort was really nice with balconies overlooking a nice shaded lawn area and the beach. The snorkeling was just okay. We were spoiled by Shark's Cove.

Lots of in-shape, minimally clothed bodies in Hawaii. I told Helen that I was so tired of all these young hot women constantly doing a public shower striptease every time I turned around. She said, "Yeah, right". They all seemed to relish long public showers where they had no shyness in trying to wash every grain of sand from even the most delicately private areas.

Haleiwa, the main town on the North Shore

We were hoping for some quick shave ice, but the lines were too long. We had to get back to Kailua and return our snorkeling equipment before the shop closed.

Would have liked to try Matusmoto's, but there was a long line out front

Returning snorkeling equipment at Kailua Sailboards and Kayaks

Next door for a bite at K and K BBQ

The meat was a little tough, but very flavorful
Island Snow again. What? It's in the same shopping center. We can't not get a shave ice.

Derek wasn't playing around and got double ice cream
