Poor Hammy

Helen and I were still in bed on Sunday morning when the usual morning sounds of television and xbox were abruptly interrupted by sounds of distress. We perked up and knew something was wrong. It wasn't long before the boys were in our bedroom crying and telling us that their hamster, Hammy, was dead.

The boys had gotten Hammy and her sister, Chub Chub, a couple months ago. Hammy was always very nervous and recently she had gotten a cut on her back just above her tail. We had been treating the cut for a week or so and it seemed to be getting better. However, we were confused as to how she had gotten the cut. Hammy seemed to be the dominant hamster and Chub Chub was always so docile that it seemed out of the question that she had hurt Hammy. It was a mystery. Derek researched it and said that it was most likely inadvertent. Hamsters are very territorial but since Hammy and Chub Chub were sisters from the same litter we were told that it was ok to keep them together. We never saw them fight and they always cuddled together.

However it looked like something had attacked Hammy. We think maybe Hammy had inflicted the damage on herself. It was very strange. Last week Hammy had gotten out of her cage. We heard Lulu, our dachshund, chasing something around the kitchen cabinets. Helen saw a little face sticking out from under the cabinets, but didn't even think about it being one of the hamsters. She quickly held Lulu back to investigate and saw that it was indeed one of the hamsters. Hammy had found a way to escape her cage. We fixed the cage so Hammy could no longer get out. Maybe it was too much for Hammy to be trapped and she took herself out or maybe she was so nervous because Chub Chub was secretly terrorizing her. We'll never know.

We had a little ceremony for Hammy and buried her next to George

Hammy was Adam's hamster so he was the one most affected
