Surveying the damage
We hit a deer a little after midnight, in the middle of nowhere, on our way to Crater Lake. There were very few cars on the road. We noticed a truck coming in the opposite direction and I mentioned to Helen that their lights seemed really bright. Seconds later the truck reached us and a deer jumped from the other side of the road immediately behind the truck. We had no chance. There was a flash of movement, a loud thud, and some panic as we pulled over to assess the damage. Our right headlight was smashed, but the car appeared to be drivable - thankfully. We were exhausted and reached our Mazama Village Cabin sometime after 1 am.
I tried calling Thrifty a couple times in the morning, but our cell coverage was spotty and I wasn't up for navigating the phone maze. We would just have to deal with it when we got back to Portland in a couple days. For the rest of the trip we were very leery of animals that might cross the road. Especially when we saw signs for elk and moose. |

Some hoof marks on the door |

Crater Lake Lodge
It would have been nice to stay at the lodge, but there were no rooms available even 6 months in advance. We kept checking for cancelations but never got one. |
|
Seeing Crater Lake for the first time...an amazing experience |
|
One of those places you just keep taking pictures of trying, in vain, to capture something that can't possibly be captured |
|
Time for some breakfast at the lodge |
|
The lodge was really nice and you can't beat the view, but the breakfast didn't match up to the Timberline Lodge breakfast |
|
Fire crew doing some work |
|
A Franklin auto club was having some sort of gathering and there were lots of neat old cars on the park roads |
|
Watching the park movie
I love the National Park movies. The parks are so big and so inaccessible. It's nice when they make a movie that covers some of the things you never get to see. |
|
We bought a Canadian National Park pass as well as Oregon and Washington state park passes before the trip, but weren't sure the US National Park pass would arrive in time so we waited to get one at Crater Lake |

Stocking up on some gas and groceries |

Cleetwood Cove Trail down to the lake
We only went a little way down the trail. Derek didn't even bother to get out of the car and do the little bit we did. He wasn't about to go a mile down to the lake and then back up. Lucky for him we had a long day of driving ahead of us and we didn't want to spend the time if everyone wasn't going to be up for it. |

Bye Bye Crater Lake |

Lots of lumber yards in Oregon |

We stopped at Wildlife Safari in Winston
I wasn't sure if the place would be worthwhile or if it would be a waste of time. It turned out to be surprisingly entertaining. The kids were really into it and had a great time. |

We loved this guy with his slickly parted hair and sweet moves he was definitely a playa |
|
We saw some of the bridges and there's something appealing about covered bridges, but this stop turned out to be mostly a dud. After trying to find some of the other bridges we realized the distances were much larger than the information we had led us to believe. We wasted more time than we should have on this one. |
|
Natural History Museum
We would have liked to have seen this place, unfortunately it's closed on Mondays and we were passing through town...on Monday. That happens to us more times than you would expect.

Heading to the coast |
|
Getting late and no time to find a quaint, cute, authentic local eatery. The kids finally settled on Arby's once the pickings looked slim. Helen and I passed. |
|
Hallmark Resort in Newport
It was late and we were tired, but it was nice to smell the salty ocean air and hear the waves as we slept. |
