Northwest 2015 (Day 4 of 22): Oregon Coast - Portland

Hallmark Resort in Newport

We got in after midnight again and it turned out that the sofa was not a pullout, but rather more of a love seat. In spite of the small size, Adam still chose the love seat over sleeping with Derek.

A cold compress for my eyes

The combination of long days and something in the air had my eyes really messed up

Time to check out the view from the balcony

We slept with the balcony door open so we could hear the sound of the ocean

Checking out the pool and other amenities we'll never get to enjoy on the way to breakfast

There was a nice restaurant, Georgie's, on site

Derek was very pleased with his order

Nice romantic rooms with fireplaces. Too bad there wasn't a big storm to watch roll in over the water.

Checking out the beach

We talked with this family and petted their sweet dog, Cappuccino

Oregon Coast Aquarium

Lots of tsunami warning information along the Oregon coast

We like fudge

Back across the Newport Bay to the waterfront for lunch

Original Mo's Seafood location in Newport

We settled on Local Ocean for lunch

Adam and Derek said they wanted to try the oyster shooters but changed their mind when they saw the shooters

So I ate them

Checking out some stores along the waterfront

Yaquina Head

Devil's Punchbowl

Oh, look. There's a Mo's here.

We just had lunch, but we can probably have some chowder...

...and some dessert

We still talk about that Marionberry cobbler at Mo's

See a couple things, eat. See a couple things, eat. That seems to be our routine.

Boiler Bay

Pacific City

Derek laughing trying to climb to the top of the soft sand dune

"Haystack" rocks along the Oregon coast

Pelican Pub and Brewery

This was one of the options on our itinerary, but we passed on it. There was a hotel across the street with a lot of people on the decks watching the beautiful sunset.

Cape Lookout State Park

Getting in and out of the car takes a toll

There are lots of beautiful things to see, but getting in and out of the car takes a toll...in time and energy. Often Derek, especially, didn't bother to get out and look around. It's annoying that time won't stand still while you're trying to see things and it's annoying that trying to see things tires you out.

Our dinner spot, Roseanna's

What a view

We almost missed out by watching the sunset and snapping pictures beforehand. They were closing up, but graciously seated us and didn't act put out in any way.

What a meal. Everything was delicious.

Too good to be true

One of those special experiences I'm always searching for on our trips

Aha! That's where they make the yummy Tillamook cheese

We drove through Cannon Beach as daylight was fading

Everyone says you have to go to Cannon Beach when you're on the Oregon coast. It looked like a really nice well done town with lots of nice shops. I don't know what we would have done there. Probably walk around and look in the shops. I just like to soak up the atmosphere of aesthetically pleasing places.

Time to make some cuts

At this point it was about 10 pm and getting dark and we still had hours to go to our hotel in Portland. We decided to skip traveling up the coast to Astoria and headed east to Portland. Maybe we could squeeze in Astoria later on. I really hated not seeing Astoria, with its location at the mouth of the Columbia River and all its history. I can't stand having to make choices. I want to see it all and I don't want to be rushed. Is that too much to ask?

Another post midnight arrival at the Embassy Suites hotel in Portland
