Appalachian Mountains - Grayson Highlands (Day 3 of 6)

 Quality Inn in Abingdon, Virginia

We didn't have any pre-booked reservations on this trip. We packed the camping stuff intending to use it, but not really sure how much. Evidently, we can only rough it for one night before giving in to fast food and a hotel room.

Blog post for previous day (Max Patch)

Blog post for following day (Grayson Highlands, McAfee Knob)

Old Town Abingdon sure is cute

On the road headed west to Damascus, Virginia

We really liked Damascus

They call Damascus "Trail Town, USA" because the Appalachian Trail and Virginia Creeper Trail go through town and there's also a big annual Trail Days celebration in May

We talked to this nice couple for a while. They took our picture and then recommended, Harvest Table, the Barbara Kingsolver restaurant nearby - before heading out on the Virginia Creeper Trail.

On the road again

Grayson Highlands State Park

We were surprised how there were no signs letting us know we were headed in the right direction, but then the park sign suddenly appeared

Our little Honda Fit did great, off road and all. Who needs a Subaru.

Nice visitor center and store

Twin Pinnacles and Big Pinnacle trails start next to the visitor center

Ice cream

We decided to camp at the park campground

Cute campground store

Hiking the Wilson Creek Trail just before dark was beautiful
