Alaska 2012: Day 5 of 22 (Juneau)

Another rainy day as we approach Juneau, which is the capitol of Alaska, and not reachable by road

All photos for this day

All photo albums

We didn't book a shore excursion so we weren't in a hurry to leave the ship. Adam wanted to show us the theater where his club made pizzas and watched a movie the night before.

The Lido Deck buffet line. We visited often.

The "Sea Princess" seemed to be on the same schedule as our ship. I'm not sure how they determine which ships get to dock, but the Sea Princess didn't get to and the passengers had to tender back and forth.

The tide went out and we had to wait to exit the ship until they moved the gangplank up a deck

It's always a tourist cattle call at the ports

The Mount Roberts Tramway. We probably would have ridden it had the cloud cover not been so low.

Adam kept telling us that he wanted to see some huskies so he was very excited to see this guy with his 2 big babies

Catching a shuttle to Mendenhall Glacier

We thought this was the Devil's Club we had seen and learned about in Ketchikan, but it's actually Cow Parsnip. They look kind of similar. The white Cow Parsnip and purple Lupin were blooming all over Alaska and covered the roadsides.

Lupin

We found a trail that was off the beaten path

We had seen some bald eagles in Ketchikan but this was my first picture of one

This path led to a beautiful view of the glacier

Bears in the area

We didn't see anyone for a long time and the Me signs gave us comfort that we were not lost

We weren't sure Helen was going to make it

We were getting a little worried until we ran across this sign with some directions

As we approached the parking lot where we started our hike, a woman said there was a bear up ahead. We were on a raised fenced in boardwalk so we were excited rather than scared. The bear wasn't very cooperative about giving me a clear shot of its face.

We went to the visitor center area and caught a ranger talk about the glacier

We decided to take a hike to the falls near the glacier

On the way back we saw another bear

It seemed like everything grew bigger in Alaska, including these dandelions, which seems strange given the shorter growing season. Adam was constantly picking up the giant dandelions to blow off the fuzzy parts.

When we got back to town the huskies were still there, but tired after a long day

We were tired too but walked around town some

We were hungry and decided to try out Tracy's King Crab Shack

Pretty impressive

Adam had fun watching the guy prepare the crab

Everybody devoured the first leg so I went back for a bucket

We had some crab cakes, bisque, cole slaw, and rolls as well and everything exceeded expectations. This was one of those times where it seemed like the place would be a tourist trap, but we were very impressed.

Fat and sleepy

We didn't make it up for the formal dinner so we ate at the buffet later in the evening

Adam was always anxious to get back to his club
