Alaska 2012: Day 20 of 22 (Soldotna to Anchorage)

We spent the night in Soldotna, got up early, and went to the local Fred Meyer for fishing licenses for me and Helen and then went to the Swiftwater campground for some salmon fishing on the Kenai river.

There were people fishing which is a good sign that some fish were in. The red salmon run hadn't really begun in earnest, but there were some early fish to be caught.

Jason and Laine setting us up

With red salmon, it's not really fishing. It's more like snagging. You toss upstream to about 10 o'clock and then let the line drift to about 12 o'clock and then pull hard towards you hoping to snag the salmon in the mouth as they swim upstream. You're not supposed to keep any fish not caught in the mouth, but people do. The locals seem to think anything in front of the gills is ok.

We never caught any fish, but people were catching them across the river and people on our side with waders were catching them farther down beyond the platform

Laine worked herself into a prime spot, but no fish

Fishing only holds the attention so long

We didn't catch any fish, but it was fun to see how it's done

The fish counts had just recently climbed to about 10,000 when we were on the Kenai. Jason and Laine were having lunch a few days later on Monday in Anchorage when Jason checked the fish count and saw that it had jumped to 100,000. He and Laine packed up and were back on the Kenai catching their limit that evening. Kelley and Paul went down on the weekend and, by then, the fish were gone. The peak fish count was almost 200,000.

Back in Anchorage and unpacking

After some back and forth Kelley made the executive decision to get take out Vietnamese
