Appalachian Mountains - McAfee Knob (Day 5 of 6)

We stayed the night at the La Quinta Inn near McAfee Knob, so we would be ready to hike in the morning

Blog post for previous day (Grayson Highlands-Roanoke)

Blog post for following day (Dollywood)

We didn't realize, until we heard several yappy dogs, that this hotel is quite popular with pet owners

We were pretty much drenched in sweat on the way up

We made it

We took the fire road back down

Resting and stretching

Rain threatened all morning and finally came as we were finishing up

We started our hike talking about what were going to have at The Homeplace. Those thoughts kept us going all day. We were outside waiting when the doors opened at 4.

On the road with full bellies

We talked about continuing north to Harper's Ferry, our original goal, but things took longer than we expected and we decided to head back towards home. I told Adam that it might be fun to go to Dollywood on the way back and he agreed, so we headed for Pigeon Forge.

We were in visual sensory overload driving along the Pigeon Forge strip. There were lots of people, lights, and over the top attention grabbing things everywhere, as well as what seemed like an amusement park\minigolf place on every corner.

We had a hard time finding a hotel in nearby Gatlinburg. We reserved one on the phone only to back out when we arrived and there was no place to park because the place was hosting a huge biker convention. We were tired and grateful when we finally found a decent room at the Quality Inn.
