Hawaii 2014 (Day 2 of 19): Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, Waikiki

Ginger Cottage - our rental in Kailua

The cottage is a detached building in the back of this private home. There were a lot of cars out front so we think there were other rentals on the property, but never really did figure out what was exactly going on. The cottage was perfect for us - comfortable enough, but not too comfortable that everyone wanted to hang out there instead of exploring the island.

When we headed out in the morning, we were in awe of the lush soaring green mountains surrounding us. It was dark when we got into Kailua the night before and we didn't see them.

It was really special visiting Pearl Harbor on Memorial Day. There were some special arrangements for Memorial Day, but it wasn't over the top. We were there early so it wasn't too crowded and there was plenty of space to move around. It was really well done. There was a movie, indoor exhibits, and plenty of outdoor exhibits.

Ono Hawaiian Foods

There was a line, but we decided to wait it out

Hawaiian sun is hot

The combo plate

We loved this place. The waitress came over and explained all the Hawaiian foods to us and showed us how to salt the onions and dip them in the poi. L-R: salad, onions, rice, poi, butterfish luau, laulau, hot sauce, kalua pork, lomi salmon, haupia

We saw this trail (Moleka Trail) as we were driving by and decided to take a hike

Back down the mountain

University of Hawaii

We drove up to Manoa Falls to check out the area, but it was a too late to hike the trail. We loved the Manoa area.

University of Hawaii's Lyon Arboretum is located nearby. It closes at 4 so we didn't get a chance to go in.

More hills of Manoa

When we were at Ala Moana Beach the previous night we had seen info about a floating lantern ceremony on Memorial Day evening. We drove by to see it, but the park was packed and it looked like it was going to be a pain to find parking so we drove on to Waikiki.

We parked next to the zoo at Kapioloni Park

I was thinking Waikiki would be kind of trashy and touristy, but it was really nice. They have a well done beach walk that connects everything. There were a lot of people, but it felt more vibrant than overcrowded. There was plenty of space and everything was well maintained.

Beautiful place to watch the sunset

Boogie Boarders waiting on the next swell

Duke

Dinner at Duke's. It was touristy, loud, and overpriced, but you gotta hand it to them - they do it well.

The Hawaiian Pizza with kalua pork and pineapple was really good
