Hawaii 2014 (Day 9 of 19): Maui - Lahaina

After a late dinner the previous night at Haliimaile General Store we drove about an hour to our condo, which was located in a development called International Colony Club in Kaanapali (just north of Lahaina).

Album for these photos

All photo albums

We were so happy with this condo. The development is older so the owner must have totally redone the place recently. She did a great job.

The boys always appreciate separate beds. Derek liked the place so much he said he was never leaving.

Even the boys bathroom had a nice walk in shower

There was no air condition, but with all windows, fans, and generally airy feel - it was always comfortable

Nice covered lanai

The place was quiet with beautiful landscaping

Driving into Lahaina for lunch

Aloha Mixed Plate

Nice setting overlooking the water

Poke and Hawaiian Feast

Derek got the burger

It was a nice setting and the food was good, but the workers seemed detached and it felt like a tourist spot. It didn't help that everyone eating around us looked blatantly tourist. I don't like feeling like I'm feeding at the tourist trough. I know it's a contradiction because I'm a tourist too, but I want to be the only tourist.

Driving into Lahaina town

Banyan Tree Park - the banyan tree is impressively large (3rd largest tree in the world according to a guy who saw us admiring it)

Adam climbing on the tree before we saw the signs not to

Walking along the waterfront and all the booths selling activities. Can I interest you in a dinner cruise?

Checking out some of the kitschy shops

Ululani's Shave Ice

The guy making my ice was from Atlanta too. I hate it when it feels like a small world.

Adam just wanted a hot dog

This was the best shave ice we had in Hawaii. It was huge, flavorful, and they poke holes in the ice to make sure the flavors saturate thoroughly.

I like to add the azuki beans. They put them on top here and on the bottom at other places.

Lahaina was a nice enough town, but like Maui, in general, it feels like tourism is it's sole reason for being. Somehow, it didn't feel like that on Oahu. There it felt like you could be a tourist and still be an observer or even a participant in local Hawaiian life.

I see our next picture is of the sunset. We must have taken a nap. That condo was a nap trap. It was always so quiet and peaceful and there was always a breeze rustling through the branches of the surrounding gardens and coming in through the open windows.

The Sugar Cane Train stop was next to our condo

The kids never really showed any interest. Sometimes we get sad when we think about how they used to get so excited about things like that.

The Westin Kaanapali Resort was across the street from our condo

Kahekili Beach Park next to the Westin

They have a really nice beach walk connecting the hotels along the beach in Kaanapali

After sunset, the boys went back to the condo and Helen and I had romance strolling the beach walk
